Frequently asked questions

What counts as a fuel system recall?

A safety recall where the defect is in the parts that store or deliver fuel: the fuel pump, fuel lines and hoses, the fuel rail and injectors, the filler neck, or the tank itself. Most involve a risk of the engine stalling or of a fuel leak that could start a fire.

How do I know if my car is affected?

Enter your 17-character VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. A recall covers specific build dates and plants, so two cars of the same year can differ. Your VIN is on the driver's side of the dashboard, the door jamb sticker, and your registration.

Do I have to pay for a recall repair?

No. Under federal law the manufacturer has to fix a safety defect for free, by repairing or replacing the part, or in some cases refunding or buying back the vehicle. Any authorized dealer for the brand can do the work.

What should I do if my fuel pump is under recall?

Book the repair with a dealer as soon as parts are available. Until then, watch for warning signs the recall notice lists, such as the engine running rough, stalling or not starting, and follow any interim advice from the manufacturer.
